Requirements for the properties and preparation of the concrete base before applying the self-leveling floor

The concrete base plays an extremely important role in the process of applying the poured floor. The durability, aesthetic, and operational characteristics of the coating depend on the quality of the base. Proper preparation of the base, including cleaning, leveling, and applying a primer, allows for achieving high quality of the final result and extending the service life of the poured floor.

Before installing the polymer coating on concrete and other mineral bases, it is necessary to check their compliance with current building and technical standards.

The base must be:

  1. Clean: The surface must be thoroughly cleaned of dust, dirt, oils, paint, greases, and other contaminants. Using special cleaning agents or mechanical cleaning methods, such as grinding or sandblasting, will help achieve the necessary level of cleanliness. Residues of old coatings or contaminants can impair the adhesion of the poured floor, leading to a decrease in its operational characteristics.
  2. Dry: The moisture content of the concrete should not exceed 4%. Special moisture meters can be used to check the moisture level. High humidity can lead to impaired adhesion and the formation of defects in the coating, such as blisters, cracks, or peeling. Before applying the poured floor, the concrete base should be well dried, especially if the work is being carried out in damp or cold conditions.
  3. Level: It is necessary to level all irregularities, cracks, and defects. For this, special leveling mixtures or putties can be used. A level surface ensures an even distribution of the poured floor and prevents the formation of “bubbles” and other defects. Leveling also helps avoid excessive material waste that may occur due to filling irregularities.
  4. Strong: The concrete base must be strong and stable, without delaminations and weak spots. To check the strength, a pull-off test or other mechanical tests can be conducted. Weak areas should be removed and replaced with new concrete or repair mixtures. The strength of the base affects the durability of the poured floor, as an insufficiently strong base can lead to cracks and depressions in the covering.
  5. Treated with primer: For better adhesion of the poured floor, it is recommended to use a primer. It provides better bonding between the base and the poured covering, reduces surface porosity, and prevents bubble formation. The primer should be applied in an even layer and allowed to dry completely before applying the poured floor. Using a quality primer also helps save material for the poured floor, as it reduces absorption by the concrete base.

Work should be carried out at temperatures not lower than +5°C and not higher than +30°C. It is also important to avoid sharp temperature fluctuations during the application and drying of the covering, as this can affect the quality and durability of the poured floor. High or low temperatures can change the properties of the material, which will affect the drying time and final quality of the covering.

Avoid vibrations in the room while applying the self-leveling floor, as this can lead to uneven distribution of the material and the formation of defects. Vibrations can cause waves or irregularities on the surface of the self-leveling floor, which will worsen its appearance and performance characteristics.

If the concrete base has deformation or temperature joints, they should be properly prepared before applying the self-leveling floor. This may include cleaning, filling, and sealing the joints with special materials. Improper preparation of the joints can lead to cracks and deformations in the self-leveling floor covering, significantly reducing its durability.

Before applying the self-leveling floor, it is recommended to conduct a test application on a small area to check all parameters: adhesion, drying time, and uniformity of material distribution. This will help identify potential problems and make necessary adjustments before starting the main work.

It is important to plan the entire process of applying the self-leveling floor in advance, including preparatory work, application time, drying time, and operating conditions. This will help avoid mistakes and ensure high quality of the final result.

During the work, it is necessary to constantly monitor the quality of the stages of preparation and application of the self-leveling floor. Regular checks of each stage will allow timely detection and elimination of possible defects that may affect the final result. Recording the results of inspections in a quality journal will help analyze the process and improve the working methodology in the future.

Also, after completing the work, it is important to adhere to the operating conditions of the self-leveling floor. Avoid excessive mechanical loads, aggressive chemical influences, and temperature fluctuations in the first days after application. This will help ensure optimal conditions for complete drying and hardening of the coating, which will increase its durability and wear resistance.

To ensure the durability and preservation of the aesthetic properties of the self-leveling floor, it is recommended to carry out periodic maintenance. Regular cleaning, timely elimination of mechanical damage, and application of protective coatings will help extend the service life of the self-leveling floor.

After completing the work, we provide users of the premises with detailed instructions for the operation and care of the self-leveling floor. This will help avoid improper use and ensure compliance with all care recommendations.

Adhering to all the recommendations and requirements listed above will ensure high-quality execution of the self-leveling floor application work, positively impacting its durability, aesthetic, and operational characteristics.
